100 Meter Dash
I actually expected this to be a bit closer, but Weir's Donavan Spencer clobbered the field with a super 10.70, which is a new State Record and the 8th Best All-Time State Meet Performance and the 2nd Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. He really pulled away in the last 50 meters. Lewis' Adam Cutlip was quite speedy as well with a 10.92 time which will stand as the 10th Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. Winfield's Trenton Pongsugree was 3rd in 11.12. Bluefield took the next two spots with Carlos Reed and Latrell Collier going 11.23 and 11.25, respectively. Weir's Sebastian Spencer took the final spot with an 11.31. All 8 in the finals ran 11.40 or better.
RunWV's Current Score: 5 of 6.

200 Meter Dash
Weir's Donavan Spencer already had the lead coming out of the turn and sped to the win in 22.20. Lewis' Adam Cutlip was a strong 2nd in 22.54. Weir's Sebastian Spencer was the only other one to go under 23 seconds with a 22.99. Winfield's Hayden O'Dell didn't miss that mark by much at 23.08 in 4th.
RunWV's Current Score: 10 of 12.

400 Meter Dash
Clay's Trevor Armes trailed most of the first 75% of the race, pulling even as they headed into the homestretch, and pulled away to win in 48.83, which is the 5th Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. Winfield's Hayden O'Dell led that first 300 meters and easily held the 2nd spot at 49.59. Berkeley Springs' Steven Shetler was the only other one to be under 51 seconds with a 50.88. Oak Glen's Jake McCoy was the only other one under 52 with a 51.80. Two of my predicted placers did not run.
RunWV's Current Score: 14 of 18.

800 Meter Run
At the end of a 1st lap that saw a bit of a rabbit and then a surge, things settled into Berkeley Springs' Brady Price in 1st at 59 seconds with East Fairmont's Blake Ashcraft matching that time in 2nd. I think Nitro's Derek Waugh was in 3rd and Fairmont Senior's Miguel Figueroa in 4th, Berkeley Springs' Steven Shetler in 5th and Winfield's Aaron Withrow in 6th. On the 2nd lap, Price continued to lead throught the turn with Ashcraft close behind. They had opened a small gap on Waugh in 3rd as Shetler and Withrow made the pass on Figueroa. At the end of the backstretch, Withrow and Shetler moved past Waugh into 3rd and 4th. As they started the final turn, Price started to pull away from Ashcraft. Heading into the homestretch, it was Price out front and Withrow and Shetler moved past Ashcraft. Price continued to pull away to secure the win by nearly 2 seconds in 1:58.64. Shetler got by Withrow for 2nd in 2:00.63. Withrow held the 3rd spot in 2:01.25. East Fairmont's Mason Weese came from way back to move up to 4th in 2:02.58, just getting by Ashcraft in the last few meters. He was 10th after 1 lap, 8th with 200 to go, and was just moving into 6th, but a good 15 meters behind 4th heading into the final stretch. Ashcraft was 5th in 2:02.80. Waugh just held onto the final position in 2:03.20.
RunWV's Current Score: 17 of 24.

1600 Meter Run
Unlike in the 3200, the field went out aggressively in the 1600. Winfield's Aaron Withrow led them through in 1:03 with Nicholas' Jackson Reed and Berkeley Springs' Matt Chapman matching that time in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Bridgeport's Jimmy Lacaria was in 4th at 1:04. I believe it was Fairmont Senior's Caleb Carlson in 5th at 1:05 with Bridgeport's Mark Duez in 6th also at 1;05. The front four stayed together on the 2nd lap with Withrow holding about a 2 meter lead at 2:12. Chapman moved into 2nd just before the line also at 2:12 and Reed just behind also at 2:12. Lacaria was in 4th at 2:13. Carlson remained in 5th at 2:15. Robert C. Byrd's Danah Phillips had moved into 6th at 2:17. On the 3rd lap, Chapman moved to the lead in the homestretch at 3:19 with Withrow right on his heels with the same time and Lacaria just 1 second back in 3rd. Reed remained in 4th but had lost contact at 3:23. Phillips was in 5th. I don't know who was in 6th. On the final lap, Chapman led through the first turn. Midway through the backstretch, Withrow made the pass into the lead, and led into the turn. He opened a small gap through the turn, but coming out of the turn, Chapman made a run to pull nearly event, and they battled down the stretch with Withrow managing to pull away in the last 10 meters for the win in 4:22.00 which gives him the 8th Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. Chapman was just off that mark in 4:22.54, which is good enough to be the 10th Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. Lacaria easily held the 3rd spot in 4:24.96. Reed held off Phillips with a late kick for 4th 4:31.44 to 4:32.98. Winfield's Luke Lumadue took the final spot at 4:37.01 as the top 8 were under 4:40.
RunWV's Current Score: 22 of 30.

3200 Meter Run
Unlike last year, the field went out very reasonably with Nicholas' Jackson Reed leading them through at 1:10. Winfield's Aaron Withrow was on his shoulder with the same time. Bridgeport's Mark Duez was in 3rd at 1:12. I believe it was Oak Hill's Zach Webb in 4th with the same time. Bridgeport's Jimmy Lacaria and East Fairmont's Mark Ellis were in the final two spots, also at 1:12. The field stayed bunched up on the 2nd lap with Withrow and Reed still at the front at 2:23, with Withrow holding the slightest of leads. Lacaria had moved into 3rd at 2:24 with Duez in 4th at the same time. Robert C. Byrd's Danah Phillips had moved into 5th at 2:25 with Ellis in 6th at the same time. On the 3rd lap, things remained much the same with Withrow in the front at 3:37 and Reed matching that time just behind. Lacaria was in 3rd at 3:38. Duez was in 4th at 3:39 with Ellis matching that time in 5th. Phillips was in 6th also at 3:39. At the mid-way point, Reed had moved to the front at 4:50. Withrow was just behind with the same time. Lacaria was in 3rd at 4:51 with Duez 4th in the same time. Phillips had moved into 5th at 4:52 with Winfield's Luke Lumadue moving into 6th at 4:53. On lap 5, the field started to spread a little more. Withrow moved into the lead at 6:02 with Lacaria close behind at 6:03. Duez moved into 3rd at 6:04. Phillips was in 4th at 6:05, just ahead of Reed, also at 6:05. Lumadue was in 6th at 6:06. On lap 6, Withrow and Lacaria distanced themselves from the rest with Withrow still holding the lead at 7:15 to Lacaria's 7:16. Duez was in 3rd at 7:20, and Phillips was in 4th at 7:21. Lumadue had moved into 5th at 7:22. Reed was in 6th at 7:23. On the 7th lap, Withrow took control of the race, establishing a gap on Lacaria, coming through in 8:25 to Lacaria's 8:28. Phillips had moved into 3rd in 8:37 with Duez 4th in 8:39. Lumadue was in 5th at 8:40 with Reed holding 6th at 8:46. On the final lap, Withrow didn't have to kill it and strolled home in 9:35.59. Lacaria was not threatened for the 2nd spot in 9:41.48. Phillips pulled away for the 3rd position in 9:45.12. Duez easily held the 4th spot in 9:49.86. Lumadue controlled the 5th spot in 9:55.11. Reed held on for the 6th position in 10:05.43.
RunWV's Current Score: 27 of 36.

110 Meter High Hurdles
Keyser's Deavonta Johnson would not be denied this time as he led from the start and won it going away in 14.92. Lewis' Austin Lee just edged Grafton's Tristenn Cochran for 2nd, 15.25 to 15.26. Roane's Haden Coon was a strong 4th in 15.39. Nicholas' Juvenal Perez was 5th in 15.76, and Bridgeport's Braeden Oldaker was also under 16 in 6th with a 15.94. Two of my predicted placers did not run.
RunWV's Current Score: 31 of 42.

300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles
Keyser's Deavonta Johnson led most of the race despite clubbing almost everything in site, but it caught up with him as he fell over the next-to-last hurdle while trying to hold off the charge of Grafton's Tristeen Cochran who went on to win it in 39.73. The way it was going, it looked like Cochran was going to catch him anyway, but I would liked to have seen it play out. Lewis' Austin Lee took the 2nd spot in 40.27. Nicholas' Juvenal Perez won a tight battle for 3rd over East Fairmont's Michael Gaskill and Andrew Slusser as the three went 40.80, 40.84, and 40.85, respectively. Sissonville's Chris Cottrell grabbed the 6th spot from the 1st heat in 41.90. Two of my predicted placers did not run.
RunWV's Current Score: 34 of 48.

4x100 Meter Relay
After a disastrous 4x100 and 4x200 last year, Bluefield put it all together this year as their unit of Elijah Greene, Shemar Hairston, Latrell Collier, and Carlos Reed shattered the State Record with a stellar 43.00, which is also the Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. Keyser was great as well as their group of Brady Ours, Maleik Garland, Deavonta Johnson, and Matthew Liller went 43.54, which is the 3rd Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. Winfield was a solid 3rd in 44.23. Bridgeport was 4th in 44.64. Nicholas joined them under 45 seconds with a 44.81 in 5th. Nitro took the final spot in 45.16.
RunWV's Current Score: 40 of 54.

4x200 Meter Relay
After a disastrous 4x100 and 4x200 last year, Bluefield put it all together this year (hmmm...that sounds familiar) as their group of Elijah Greene, Shemar Hairston, Latrell Coller, and Carlos Reed went 1:29.69 to set a new State Record despite easing up before the line. That time also stands as the Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. They won by over 2.5 seconds. Winfield was 2nd in 1:32.25 with Keyser coming from behind to nip Bridgeport for 3rd, 1:32.97 to 1:32.99. Oak Glen was 5th in 133.27. Nicholas was the only other team under 1:35 with their 1:34.65 to get 6th.
RunWV's Current Score: 45 of 60.

4x400 Meter Relay
Winfield led the field through the 1st leg with East Fairmont in 2nd, Keyser in 3rd, Oak Glen in 4th, and Berkeley Springs in 5th. On the 2nd leg, it was East Fairmont moving into the lead at 1:44. Oak Glen was in 2nd at 1:45 with Keyser close behind in 3rd in 1:46. Winfield was in 4th also at 1:46. Bridgeport and Berkeley Springs were together at 1:48. On the 3rd leg, Keyser moved into the lead at 2:37 with East Fairmont in 2nd matching that time about about a meter behind. They had gapped the field as Oak Glen was in 3rd at 2:40 with Berkeley Springs in 4th at 2:41. Winfield was in 5th a 2:42 and Bridgeport was in 6th, also at 2:42. On the final leg, Keyser opened their gap a bit on the backstretch and was able to hold on for the close victory in 3:28.64. That ties the group of Brady Ours, Reggie Redman, Christian Ravenscroft, and Deavonta Johnson for the 9th Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. East Fairmont was easily 2nd in 3:29.10. Shady Spring picked up 3rd place from the 1st heat in 3:32.65. Berkeley Springs was 4th in 3:33.39. Oak Glen was 5th in 3:35.00. Frankfort grabbed 6th from the 1st heat in 3:35.45.
RunWV's Current Score: 49 of 66.

4x800 Meter Relay
Things got off to a good start with East Fairmont leading through the first leg at 2:01. Winfield was in 2nd at 2:02. Weir was running 3rd in 2:04. Elkins was in 4th at 2:06. Bridgeport was in 5th, also at 2:06. Berkeley Springs was in 6th at 2:07. On the 2nd leg, Berkeley Springs got a strong 1:57.1 leg from Brady Price to move into the front at 4:04. Winfield was in the 2nd spot at 4:06, just ahead of East Fairmont, who matched that time. Bridgeport was in 4th at 4:09. Elkins was in 5th at 4:14, and Weir was in 6th at 4:17. On the 3rd leg, Berkeley Springs pulled away, getting a 1:59.7 leg from Matt Chapman to come through at 6:04. East Fairmont moved into 2nd at 6:07. Bridgeport got a 1:59.3 leg from Mark Duez to move up to 3rd in 6:09. Winfield was close behind in 6:10. Elkins was in 5th at 6:27. Weir was in 6th at 6:31. On the final leg, Berkeley Springs denied all challengers, never particularly being threatened with Steven Shetler giving them a 1:58.9 anchor leg. That gave the foursome of Wes Colyer, Brady Price, Matt Chapman, and Steven Shetler the win at 8:03.17, which is the 2nd Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. Bridgeport received a 1:57.5 from Jimmy Lacaria to move up to 2nd in 8:06.95 to give their group of Tristan Shaw, Coleton Marsh, Mark Duez, and Jimmy Lacaria the 4th Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. And they needed every bit of it because Winfield Winfield got a 1:57.5 from Aaron Withrow to take the 3rd spot in 8:08.02 and give their unit of Hayden O'Dell, Kyle Machel, Braxton Castro, and Aaron Withrow the 7th Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. East Fairmont held the 4th spot in 8:09.82, which is good enough to win most years and is just over a second off the All-Time list. These four ended up way ahead of the rest of the field as Weir moved up to 5th on the final leg in 8:36.75, and Elkins held the 6th spot at 8:38.98.
RunWV's Current Score: 54 of 72.

Shuttle Hurdle Relay
The East Fairmont squad of Logan Cerullo, Michael Gaskill, Andrew Slusser, and Aidan Slusser took the lead on the 2nd leg and held it thereafter and clocked a 57.61, which is the 5th Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. Fairmont Senior and Lewis battled in the 3rd heat to 59.12 and 59.27, respectively, which was good enough to get them the 2nd and 3rd place spots. Bridgeport was 4th in 59.41. Nicholas was 5th in 1:00.12, and Keyser took the final spot from the 2nd heat in 1:00.21. One of my predicted placers was running strong but fell.
RunWV's Current Score: 59 of 78.

High Jump
In a disappointing day that saw only 6 jumpers clear the opeing height of 5'8, Nitro's Luke Nichols took the win at 6'0. Roane's Austin McGinnish and Wyoming East's Nick Woodrum also cleared 6'0 in taking 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Two of my predicted placers didn't clear the opening height.
RunWV's Current Score: 63 of 84.

Pole Vault
Roane's Haden Coon was the only vaulter to clear 13'6 to take the win. Winfield's Kurtis Moore and Bridgeport's Joshua Osborn cleared 13'0 for 2nd and 3rd, respectively. No one else went higher than 11'0.
RunWV's Current Score: 68 of 90.

Long Jump
East Fairmont's Michael Gaskill repeated as champion with a jump of 21'6.50. Independence's Marcus Guy was 2nd with a 20'8.75. Roane's Austin McGinnis was 3rd in 20'5. Lewis' Joseph Alfre-Rubio and Fairmont Senior's John Smith just missed the 20'0 mark with both recording leaps of 19'10.75. One of my predicted placers did not jump.
RunWV's Current Score: 73 of 96.

Shot Put
Poca's Chase Dotson repeated as champion with a toss of 53'6.50. Bridgeport's Christopher Trent and Poca Freshman Caleb Hartley joined him over 50'0 with their throws of 51'9 and 50'8.50, respectively. Braxton's Lucas Bonnett wasn't far off with his throw of 49'6.75. No one else was over 45'0.
RunWV's Current Score: 78 of 102.

Discus
Poca's Chase Dotson repeated as champion here as well, winning by nearly 10'0 with his throw of 170'9, which is the 6th Best All-Time Class A-AA State Meet Performance. Poca Freshman Caleb Hartley threw 160'11 for 2nd. Braxton's Lucas Bonnett was 3rd with a 145'10. Lincoln's Clifford Ellis was 4th with a 142'4. Keyser's Shayden Daugherty was 5th with a 141'9. Brideport's Christopher Trent also topped 140' in 6th with a throw of 140'8. One of my predicted placers fouled on all 3 attempts.
RunWV's Current Score: 82 of 108.

The final score of 82 of 108 means that just 75.9 % of the people picked to place did indeed place. I was terrible last year and even worse this year. I did have 7 predicted placers that didn't compete in their event for one reason or another. Congratulations to those that proved me wrong.
